The coulée verte is a former towpath that runs for almost 20 km along the Charente river. The towpath was used to pull the barges that transported wine, paper, brandy, stones, etc. The River Charente was very important for trade, with products from the forges heading downstream or spices, salt and fish heading upstream. With the arrival of the railroads in 1853, river activity declined and was abandoned.
The Charente boasts 6,000 kilometers of marked trails, used by thousands of hikers every year.
